Photo CD in CIELAB color

CIELAB color is a color space which encompasses RGB, CMYK, and describes generally the visible spectrum that the human eye can see. Photoshop software uses the color space as its "native" space because of its ability to hold within this space each of the other color gamuts it must manage and display.

CIELAB is an ideal space for images, too, as it can be used to record color positions from other color spaces, and convert with relative ease between the various spaces it supports. Photo CD's YCC space can be mathematically reshaped to CIELAB space. The CMS Open plug-in for Photoshop is the only software that has the ability to convert images from the Photo CD disc directly into CIELAB space. This conversion is compared to other mode changes - nondestructive. It is a geometric reshaping of the mathematical values of the YCC file into LAB color space.
