Using Photo CD in page make-up

Most of the popular page make-up programs include a software feature for opening and placing Photo CD images on the page. While this is admirable, for optimum quality it is best not to use this route to get Photo CD images to print.

Page-building applications usually open Photo CD discs in RGB mode, and among them, only QuarkXPress has the ability to convert from RGB to CMYK. Thus, when using PageMaker versions 5 and earlier, for example, opening a Photo CD image in RGB will not yield a CMYK file when printing color separations. Future versions of PageMaker will likely address this issue. It is wiser to use one of the many Photo CD applications for accessing the images, cropping them, adjusting their colors and tonality, converting to CMYK, and then to import the finished image into the page make-up application.
