Working with Photo CD Image Pac files

The Photo CD Image Pac File is a single computer file that contains a plethora of image components. Starting with a Base resolution image, which is roughly the size of a standard television picture, and getting larger and smaller in multiples of four, the files available range from 72 KB to 18 MB in size for Kodak Photo CD Master disc, and from the same 72 KB to 72 MB on Kodak Pro Photo CD Master disc. The Base*64 components of the Pro Photo CD image are actually contained in a separate adjunct file called an IPE - Image Pac Extension which is stored in a different directory on the disc, and accessed when needed by acquisition software.

Choosing which component of the Image Pac File to use, and how to calculate the reproduction capacity of these images, requires understanding of some simple math that describes the relationship of pixels in an image to printed halftone dots. Before embarking on the math, let's look at the route by which originals get converted into mathematical bit-maps, and ultimately into printed dots
